Hartig is trained as a limnologist with over 20 years of practical experience in environmental science and management. He has served as River Navigator for the Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative since 1999. As River Navigator, he is working with Detroit River communities and businesses to identify and implement high priority projects addressing economic development, environmental stewardship, and historical-cultural preservation. Prior to becoming River Navigator, he spent 14 years working for the International Joint Commission. John currently serves as Director of International Association for Great Lakes Research's Science-Policy Initiative. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wayne State University where he teaches Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. John has authored or co-authored over 70 publications on the Great Lakes, including co-editing the book entitled "UNDER RAPS: Toward Grassroots Ecological Democracy in the Great Lakes Basin" and a new book titled "Honoring Our Detroit River, Caring for Our Home."
