Rebecca A. Humphries was named Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment on April 19, 2004, leaving the DNRE's Wildlife Division where she had served as Chief since December 1998. Ms. Humphries is responsible for the administration and direction of the department, which has 1,600 employees and a $260-million budget that supports programs for wildlife and fisheries management, state parks and recreation areas, conservation and law enforcement, forest management, state lands and minerals, and communications. Ms. Humphries is a graduate of Michigan State University, with a degree in fisheries and wildlife and has completed course work toward her MBA through the University of Wisconsin. She was awarded an honorary Ph.D. in public service from Central Michigan University in December 2004.
