Sandy attended Michigan State University and has her Bachelor of Science degree in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies from Mercy College of Detroit.

She has volunteered at Mariners' Inn, Karmanos Cancer Institute, American Red Cross, March of Dimes and American Cancer Society and has worked with databases at  March of Dimes, Leader Dogs for the Blind and HAVEN.
