Release Date: February 22, 2012

"This site will soon be iconic for all of the right reasons... I can tell you with confidence that once the site is made available to the Conservancy, our team will be ready and in place to immediately begin constructing this critical segment of RiverWalk." - Faye Alexander Nelson, President & CEO - Detroit Riverfront Conservancy

Uniroyal 2012This 43-acre site located east of Mt. Elliott Park and west of the MacArthur (Belle Isle) Bridge is the former home to the Uniroyal and Michelin tire companies as well as the DTE subsidiary MichCon, and DuPont. The site is currently in its first phase of remediation which involves a $20 million clean-up of the site. The Conservancy will immediately develop the public access portion of this riverfront site once the remediation is complete, providing the critical waterfront connection from Mt. Elliott Park to our bookend development at Gabriel Richard Park.

A press conference held on September 2, 2011 marked the beginning of phase one of the project at which Faye Alexander Nelson, President & CEO of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy notes, "This site will soon be iconic for all of the right reasons! The former Uniroyal site represents a major piece (in the) puzzle for the Conservancy. It provides the critical connection from this beautiful park we stand in today (Mt. Elliott Park), with our bookend plaza and pavilion at Gabriel Richard Park. I can tell you with confidence that once the site is made available to the Conservancy, our team will be ready and in place to immediately begin constructing this critical segment of RiverWalk."
