Tyree Guyton (b. Detroit, Michigan, 1955)
For over 25 years Detroit-based artist Tyree Guyton has fostered a neighborhood art exhibit called the Heidelberg Project, located in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood on the City's east side. His internationally acclaimed effort incorporates used items that have been cast off from Detroit residents. One of the impressive features at Heidelberg is Guyton's "Faces in the Hood," a pun on the salvaged auto parts and the art work's location near the artist's home.
Guyton states that each hood is his self-portrait. The variety of expressions and colorful skin tones help us to understand that the artist and his Heidelberg Project reflect the diverse richness of Detroit and the humanity common to us all.
