Volunteer Coordinator
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the Detroit Riverfront into a world-class gathering space for all. The Conservancy was founded in 2003 to develop, operate, steward, and program the Detroit Riverwalk and associated green spaces, including Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park, Dequindre Cut, Archer Greenway, and Southwest Greenway. Every year, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy welcomes more than three million visitors, many of whom engage with our active and dedicated volunteer corps.
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy seeks a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to lead the Conservancy’s volunteer program. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, onboarding, communicating with, retaining, and recognizing the Conservancy’s team of over 300 volunteers. Conservancy volunteers serve as stewards of our public spaces, provide event support for our free and low-cost public programming, and act as community advocates for our vision and mission. The Volunteer Coordinator will also be responsible for engaging corporate and community volunteer groups in volunteer projects that support our mission. This role will also support the Visitor Experience team with program planning and execution and vendor and partner training. This position will report to the Director of Visitor Experience and serve on the Conservancy’s Visitor Experience and Operations Team.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Coordinate and manage a robust volunteer program to support organizational needs
• Manage volunteer database to schedule and log service hours
• Communicate volunteer opportunities, Conservancy updates, and other relevant information to volunteer base clearly and effectively
• Maintain and develop training materials that align with the Conservancy’s policies, procedures, and values
• Support organizational-wide rollout of service pillars initiative to vendors and other partners
• Collaborate with DRFC Development Team to solicit corporate volunteer opportunities
• Oversee corporate volunteer projects in coordination with Operations staff
• Maintain community partnerships pertaining to volunteer program
• Develop volunteer retention strategies, including volunteer recognition, rewards, and appreciation events
• Oversee volunteers at Conservancy programs and events, and support program and event execution
• Manage volunteer program budget and assist with grant reports as requested
• Collect and evaluate program effectiveness through survey collection and analysis
• Other duties and cross-organizational collaborative work as assigned
Who You Are
• Bachelor's degree (preferred)
• Two to three years of relevant work experience and/or internships that involved volunteer services, event management, human resources, or people management
• Experience with Volgistics or other volunteer management software
• Ability to accomplish projects independently and manage multiple scopes of work simultaneously
• Patient and clear communicator with excellent interpersonal communication skills via the phone, over email, and face-to-face
• Fantastic customer service and high standard for quality
• Interest in building relationships with involved community members of all backgrounds
• Knowledge of the City of Detroit and an enthusiasm to contribute to the city’s public spaces
• Organized self-starter who can think strategically and creatively
• Detail-oriented individual who takes pride in their work
• Ability to have a flexible work schedule - some weeknight and weekends will be required
• Comfortable lifting and moving tables, chairs, and needed equipment
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
This is a salaried position ranged in the mid-50s based on experience and the compensation package includes medical, dental, 3 weeks paid vacation, and 401K plan.
