About This Attraction

This unique abstract sculpture, Nike of the Strait by artist Scott Hocking, is featured in the inlet at Valade Park. The sculpture honors the history of this space, previously used as a storage space for the U.S. Coast Guard’s buoys.

Nike of the Strait was created from 6 US Coast Guard buoys that were once left on this site. These buoys that once guided people through the Detroit River were disassembled, cut and reused and modeled to invoke the famous Nike at Samothrace, a famous Greek sculpture currently on display at the Louvre.
